The Reconstruction Project commemorates four Mayan Codices which survived the massive bookburning undertaken by the Bishop of the Yucatan in 1562. The artists have reconstructed a Mayan codex in the same form as one of the most beautiful surviving books, the Dresden Codex, and each artist has also contributed a large-scale wall work. The Reconstruction Project was originally exhibited as part of “Artists Call Against U.S. Intervention in Central America”’; it attempts to “symbolically re-knit the broken history in a belief in the connection between consciousness and action.”
