Mnemonic Re-Constructions
The body of work by Robert Saucier is based on scale model reproductions of major architectural and historical landmarks. They are assembled, mechanical constructions, which integrate these landmarks. Each piece, taken as a whole, functions as a hypothesis. The Eiffel Tower, the Mayflower, the Empire State Building are points of reference which encapsulate several parallel histories: one that is inscribed in official history; another that footnotes history, comprised of anecdotes; and another which feeds on popular lore. The symbols are chosen, by Saucier, because of the “institutionalization” process that hey undergo and the power conferred upon them by our collective imagination.
